Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has proposed legislation to ban central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) in the state, citing concerns over government overreach and financial surveillance. The proposed legislation would prohibit any CBDC introduced by the US Federal Reserve or foreign governments from being used as a form of money within Florida. DeSantis has referred to CBDCs as “Big Brother’s Digital Dollar” and warned against the potential for governments to use them to “exercise their agenda”, including limiting gasoline purchases and preventing people from buying firearms. Critics of CBDCs fear the possibility of government surveillance and control, while proponents argue it could improve financial inclusion by banking the unbanked. Republican voices, including House Majority Whip Tom Emmer and Fox News host Tucker Carlson, have recently expressed concerns over CBDCs.
