Lance Reddick: Remembering the Life and Legacy of a Talented Actor
The entertainment industry was shocked and saddened by the news on Friday that Lance Reddick had passed away at the age of 60, due to natural causes. Reddick was an accomplished character actor whose no-nonsense demeanor and talent was on full display in numerous acclaimed TV series, films, and franchises.
Reddick’s breakout role came in 2000 on the HBO prison drama Oz, playing the role of ill-fated undercover cop Johnny Basil in a major Season 4 story arc. Reddick quickly established himself as a go-to TV presence in dozens of top-tier shows, including Law & Order: SVU, Lost and CSI: Miami.
He starred as Lt. Cedric Daniels on all five seasons of The Wire and played Phillip Broyles on Fringe from 2008 to 2013. He appeared in all seasons of Prime TV’s Bosch as Irvin Irving, co-starred in Netflix’s 2022 Resident Evil series and portrayed Zeus in the upcoming Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
Reddick was also well-known for his work in film. He starred in four John Wick films, and had been set to star opposite Ana de Armas in the green-lit spinoff, Ballerina. His other film credits include Godzilla vs. Kong and White House Down. He stars in Kenya Barris and Doug Hall’s remake of White Men Can’t Jump with rapper Jack Harlow, which will be released later this year.
Reddick’s impressive resume and talent attracted the attention of many of Hollywood’s biggest names, including career-defining collaborations with actors like Keanu Reeves, who he worked alongside in the John Wick films, and directors such as Chad Stahelski, who Reddick worked with on John Wick: Chapter 4, dedicating the film to their “beloved friend” after his passing.
Reddick’s work in the world of entertainment touched and influenced many of his colleagues, and tributes poured in from fellow actors, filmmakers, and creators after the news of his death.
Wendell Pierce, who starred alongside Reddick on The Wire, called his friend “the epitome of class” and said the actor’s death is an “unexpected sharp painful grief for our artistic family.” And Wire creator David Simon released a statement calling Reddick “a consummate professional, a devoted collaborator, a lovely soul, and a friend.”
Reddick’s death is a great loss to the world of entertainment, leaving a gaping hole in the industry that will be difficult to fill.
