Gwyneth Paltrow’s Trial Over 2016 Skiing Accident Begins in Utah Court
Gwyneth Paltrow, the popular actress and entrepreneur, is facing a civil lawsuit over a skiing accident that allegedly occurred in 2016. The 50-year-old actress, who is also the founder of the controversial lifestyle company Goop, arrived at a Utah courtroom on Tuesday for her civil trial. The trial began on March 21, 2023, with Paltrow expected to testify, along with her husband and children.
The civil lawsuit stems from a skiing accident that occurred in 2016 at the posh Deer Valley Resort in Utah. Retired optometrist Terry Sanderson sued Paltrow for more than $3.1 million, alleging that she violently collided into him from behind on a beginner slope, leaving him with serious injuries. Sanderson broke four ribs and sustained a concussion in the crash.
Sanderson also alleged that Paltrow’s ski instructor, Eric Christiansen, falsely accused him of causing the crash and failed to call for help. Sanderson sued both Paltrow and Christiansen for negligence, along with the Deer Valley ski resort.
In response, Paltrow countersued Sanderson, claiming he was actually the one at fault for the crash and that his lawsuit was an attempt to exploit her celebrity and wealth.
The trial has been long-awaited, taking place nearly four years after the initial incident. Paltrow’s attorney stated in opening statements that Sanderson’s story is simply untrue and that he’s the one who hit her. Paltrow’s children and husband are expected to testify on her behalf during the trial.
Paltrow has earned a reputation for her controversial health and wellness advice, which many have criticized for being unscientific and dangerous. Her company Goop has faced numerous lawsuits and regulatory challenges over the years.
The outcome of the trial remains to be seen, but it is yet another example of the legal challenges that can arise in the world of celebrity, particularly when it comes to issues of liability and personal injury.
