Jeremy Renner, star of the Marvel series Hawkeye, has given his first interview since a near-fatal accident on New Year’s Day. Speaking to ABC News’ Diane Sawyer, Renner talked about being crushed by a snowcat on his property in Reno, Nevada, as he attempted to save his nephew, who also speaks out for the first time in the interview. The hero star, who broke over 30 bones in the accident described how he was awake through every moment and remembers all the pain what he went through. He also broke down in tears thinking about how he communicated through sign language in the hospital after the accident, saying, “I’m sorry,” to his family.
Despite the extent of his injuries, Renner claimed he would do it again, referencing the decision to jump into the moving snowcat to avoid it hitting his nephew. The interview airs on ABC at 10 p.m. ET/PT on April 6, only five days before Renner makes a personal appearance at the Rennervations world premiere in Los Angeles, where he is expected to do a Q&A for the Disney+ show.
Renner underwent two surgeries after breaking eight ribs in 14 places, his right knee, both ankles, and legs, clavicle, shoulder, and jaw. Footage from the interview showed the immense strides Renner has made in his recovery, including walking on an anti-gravity treadmill.
Renner has also used Instagram to document his recovery step by step, showing his commitment to his journey toward full recovery. Despite the extensive physical and emotional trauma, he has faced, he said during the interview with Sawyer, “I see a lucky man” when he looks in the mirror.
