North Korea: 800,000 People Volunteer to Join or Reenlist in Military
North Korea claims that 800,000 of its citizens volunteered to join or reenlist in the country’s military to fight against the United States, according to the state newspaper Rodong Sinmun. The report stated that on Friday alone, about 800,000 students and workers across the country expressed their desire to enlist or reenlist in the military to counter the United States.
The report also claimed that this was a demonstration of the unshakeable will of the younger generation to wipe out war maniacs and achieve national reunification. The North’s claim comes after the country launched its Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile in response to ongoing US-South Korea military drills.
The North’s ballistic missiles are banned under United Nations Security Council resolutions, and the launch drew condemnation from governments in Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo. South Korean and American forces began 11 days of joint drills, dubbed “Freedom Shield 23,” on Monday, held on a scale not seen since 2017 to counter the growing threats from the North.
North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, accused the United States and South Korea of increasing tensions with the military drills. The situation between the two Koreas remains tense, with North Korea continuing to develop its missile program and the United States maintaining a military presence in South Korea.
The report of 800,000 volunteers to join or reenlist may be exaggerated or propaganda, as it is difficult to verify the actual number. However, the fact remains that North Korea is continuing its military buildup and provocations, adding to the already tense situation in the region.
The international community, including the United States, South Korea, and Japan, must remain vigilant and continue to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the Korean peninsula. Diplomatic efforts and dialogue must continue to be pursued to prevent any further escalation of tensions and to achieve denuclearization of North Korea.
